Home & real life
Train where the behavior actually happens
Sessions happen in your home, your neighborhood, and the real-life situations your dog struggles with — and your trainer is on retainer the whole time. Text, call, or send videos whenever you need us.
- Real questions get real answers between sessions — no waiting two weeks with a problem
- Judgment-free, whatever’s been happening — we’re here to change it, not grade you on it
Behavior work doesn’t end at session four — your trainer stays available for follow-up sessions whenever your dog needs a tune-up.
Walk Away with Confidence
A dog that makes better decisions in real life — not just in a training session.
And an owner who understands what was driving the behavior and how to stay ahead of it.
Wholistic Canine is led by Terra Ruiz, Licensed Family Dog Mediator®, with continuing education through the Michael Ellis School and Training Between the Ears (TBTE).

Understanding Behavior Training
What is dog behavior training?
Dog behavior training changes why a behavior happens instead of just suppressing the symptom. We look at the whole dog — learning history, environment, genetics, and who your dog is — and build a plan that changes how they experience the things that set them off. It's the dog behavior training Sacramento owners come to us for when barking, lunging, fear, or anxiety is running the household. See how we approach it on our reactive and fearful dog training page.
How is this different from obedience training?
Obedience teaches your dog skills — sit, down, walking nicely, coming when called. Behavior training changes how your dog feels about the things that trigger them, because a dog who's over threshold can't use their skills anyway. Many dogs need both, and if obedience is really what your dog needs, we'll tell you and point you to Furry Fundamentals instead.
Does my dog need medication?
That's a question for your veterinarian, not your trainer — and we'll say so honestly. Some dogs make faster progress when medical support and training work together, and if we see signs it's worth exploring, we'll tell you and point you to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist. Bring your dog's full picture to the Consultation and we'll talk through it together.
How We Work With You
My dog has bitten someone. Will you still work with us?
Yes. A lot of dogs have bitten someone. Tell us exactly how it happened — the full story, no judgment. That's exactly what dog behavior training is for. Whether we use a muzzle depends on the bite, and we can usually tell from your intro call. For serious bites, the kind that needed medical care or stitches, your dog will be wearing a muzzle before we ever take the leash. If your dog needs to get comfortable wearing one first, we'll help you with muzzle training before we start.
My dog goes crazy at other dogs. Do you bring other dogs into sessions?
Yes — once your dog is ready. We start by building the behavior your dog needs without other dogs around. Then we bring in a dog we can control, so your dog can see the behavior we're asking for. Private sessions don't mean no other dogs or people. They mean the right ones, at the right time — not a room full of out-of-control dogs while your dog is expected to hold it together.
Do I need to be at every session?
Yes. With Feral to Focus, you're doing the work alongside your trainer, so you need to be there. Here's how our programs compare: in private sessions like this one, you and your dog learn together. In a board and train, we train your dog first, then train you. In dog day training, we train while you're gone and send you homework notes.
Can my partner and kids come to sessions?
Absolutely. Partners and kids are welcome, and we encourage them to come. Everyone your dog lives with is part of the plan — and we even give kids their own things to work on.
The Package
How much does dog behavior training cost?
Feral to Focus is $800 for four private sessions with Alex or Terra. Every dog starts with a one-hour Consultation ($150–$200, depending on your trainer), and after the package, follow-up sessions are $85 each, anytime in your dog's life. Financing is available. Our pricing is public — no mystery quotes.
What happens between sessions?
You're not on your own. Feral to Focus includes your trainer on retainer between sessions — clear step-by-step coaching on what to work on and someone to reach when you're not sure what to do next. Behavior change happens in the days between sessions, not just during them, and we build the package around that.
Four sessions doesn't sound like a lot. What if we need more?
Four sessions isn't a lot on its own — but you're not starting from zero. You start putting what you learn at your Consultation to work right away, so each session builds on that. Many families see real progress within four. Some keep going with follow-up sessions at $85 each, and some move into a board and train or dog day training. Since you've already done private sessions, a shorter board and train is often enough.
A friend to your furry family,
5 stars by 100+ customers
"I can't say enough good things about Wholistic Canine and Terra when it comes to training and understanding their furry companions. Terra has worked with myself and my four legged friend, Doug, on and off for a year and a half now. While Doug brought so much joy into my life he was also a little ball of anxiety when it came to any new experiences, including meeting new people and new dogs. Through some specialized training catering to little Dougie we were able to better understand what might be going on in his head and how to help him cope with new situations. Leaving for vacation, having guests over or even going on a walk with other fur friends were unthinkable things before the training. I'm excited to report we are now able to do ALL of these things and much more!"
