We do the training — home, work, or out, you choose
Each visit includes at least 1 hour of hands-on training, at home or out on an adventure, depending on what your dog needs. Puppies and dogs working on bigger goals may get longer visits. You can be home, at work, or out doing anything — there’s so much we can do in the comfort of your home.
-
Same-day notes
You do the reps
After every visit, you get a written report or video guide the same day with what we worked on and your homework. This part matters: without your practice between visits, your dog doesn’t get consistent reinforcement — and they’ll behave for the trainer, not for you. The reps are what make it stick at home.
Want to keep going after your pack? Ask us about continuing visits — we’ll help you pick what your dog needs next.

Furtastic House Rules FAQs
What day training is, how visits work, and what your part looks like. Straight answers, no judgment.
The Basics
What is dog day training?
Dog day training means a professional trainer comes to your dog and does the training for you — at home or out on an adventure — while you're at work, running errands, or right there in the house. It's the dog day training Sacramento families choose when they want real progress without sending their dog away. After every visit, you get homework so the training keeps going between visits.
How is this different from a board and train?
With a board and train, your dog stays with us. With Furtastic House Rules, your dog stays home — the trainer does the work there, and you do the reps. It's a great alternative if you want a trainer doing the heavy lifting but you want your dog learning in the place they actually live.
What can you work on?
New house rules and routines, settling and self-regulation at home, everyday manners, and new skills to keep a busy brain learning. There's so much we can do in the comfort of your home. If behavior concerns come up, we'll talk honestly about whether this package fits or whether Feral to Focus is the better path.
Can my puppy do this, or should we do Furst Steps?
Puppies can absolutely do day training. It's a lot of active work, and we'll set up a solid daily schedule and routine that you'll need to follow. If you're brand new to homework and routines, Furst Steps builds that foundation with you directly. If the schedule isn't working, we'll figure out why together — whether it's a communication issue, a time issue, or a puppy who'd be better served by a board and train.
I have more than one dog. Does it cost more?
No. You're paying for the trainer's time, not per dog. That time is shared across your household, so progress can take a little longer with more dogs. We'll follow the plan we write together, and if you'd like longer visits, we can talk about adding time.
Visits and Scheduling
Do I need to be home during visits?
No. You can be home, at work, or out doing anything. You're also welcome to be there for the first visit, or every visit — it's up to you. Your same-day notes or video keep you in the loop either way.
How do you get into my house?
We work that out together at your Consultation. It can be a hidden key, a key you give us, or a door code — whatever works best for your home. You don't need to be there for the first visit, since we've already met you and your dog.
How many visits a week?
Anywhere from once a week up to 5 times a week. The right pace depends on what we're working on — we'll talk it through together and find what's ideal for your dog and your goal. You book visits on the days your dog needs them most, with no locked-in schedule.
What happens on a visit?
Each visit includes at least 1 hour of hands-on training, at home or out on an adventure, depending on what your dog needs. Puppies and dogs working on bigger goals may get longer visits. Visits can also double as your dog's break in the day — potty, exercise, and company while you're gone.
What's an adventure?
An adventure means we take your dog out into the world for something fun — maybe a trip to Home Depot, or a park outing with a few other dogs. Travel time is training time too: we work on car manners and the rules of going places along the way. Adventures usually run 2 to 3 hours, at no extra charge — your trainer decides how much time your dog's day needs.
What if I need to cancel or move a visit?
Life happens, and we're flexible. If anyone in the house is sick, please cancel — we'd rather you did. Moving a visit is easy as long as you let us know. 24 hours' notice is the standard, but our real rule is simple: tell us before we've left for your house. If we're already on the way when you cancel, that visit may count as used. Full details are in our policies.
Do you come to my area? Is there a travel fee?
Each trainer serves the area within about 20 minutes of where they're based, with no travel fee. If you're farther out, reach out anyway — it depends on our current schedule and where your home falls, and we're happy to talk it through.
Safety and Care
My dog is nervous with strangers. What if he won't come to you?
That's part of what we work on. Building trust comes first — no pressure, just showing up and tossing cookies, visit after visit, until your dog decides we're good news. If your dog can't settle without you there, we start with you at home and work up to you leaving once the relationship is built.
What if something goes wrong while I'm at work?
We reach you the way we agreed on at your Consultation — text, call, whatever works for you. We don't make decisions about your dog without talking to you first. The one exception is a true emergency, like an unresponsive dog: then we head straight to the closest vet and call you on the way.
Are you insured?
Yes. We're insured, including bailee coverage, which protects your dog while they're in our care — including when we're transporting them.
What vaccines does my dog need?
All dogs need to be up to date on legally required vaccines. Beyond that, we follow your choices — how you vaccinate your dog is up to you. If an adventure includes water play, like the river, we'll check whether your dog has had the lepto vaccine and whether you're comfortable with it.
What if my dog doesn't get along with other dogs?
Then your dog won't go out with other dogs — unless that's specifically what we're working on, and only if your dog can ride safely in a crate inside the vehicle.
Training Approach
Who will be training my dog?
Mitch or Terra. Every trainer has their own specialty, and we match you with the one best suited to your dog based on what you tell us before your call. Meet the team.
What training methods do you use? Will you use a prong or e-collar?
Our training is reward-based. We set your dog up to make good choices and reward those choices. If a dog needs more help after we've given reward-based training a real try, we'll talk with you about other tools. Tools like a prong or e-collar aren't for every dog — they're never used without being discussed up front and implemented with your knowledge and approval. Learn more about our training methods.
Why does the homework matter so much?
Because your dog learns from whoever they practice with. Without your reps between visits, your dog doesn't get consistent reinforcement — and they'll behave for the trainer, not for you. After every visit, you get a written report or video guide the same day with what we worked on and your homework. That's how the training sticks at home.
How fast will I see a difference?
After 10 visits, with 10 rounds of homework, your dog will know so much more than they did before. But this is co-training. If we ask you to stop the counter-surfing and the dog is still on the counters between visits, the plan breaks down. If we see changes on our end but not at home, we'll talk honestly about what's getting in the way and whether this is still the right fit. It all comes down to communication between your dog's teacher and you.
Rates and Policies
Do I need a Consultation first?
If you're new to Wholistic Canine, yes — your trainer meets you and your dog in person, sets up home entry, and builds the plan. Consultations are $150–$200, depending on your trainer. Already worked with us, or met us at a Speak Dog Saturday at Leash and Collar? Skip straight to booking visits. Not sure yet? Start with a free intro call by phone.
Can I skip the notes and just have you train?
Yes — training-only visits without same-day notes are available on request at $175 a visit. We don't recommend it. Progress sticks when you do the homework, and the notes are how you know what to practice.
What if it's not working out, or I need to stop partway through?
Once training has begun, payments aren't refunded — but you can apply what's left to a different service with the same trainer. If you need to change trainers, it's up to the new trainer whether they'll pick up that program, since not every trainer offers every program. Either way, our goal is to keep helping your dog in a way that works for both of you.
What happens after my pack of visits?
Ask us about continuing visits — plenty of dogs keep going to keep learning new things. We'll help you pick what your dog needs next, whether that's more visits, group classes, or a different package.
